HIS BEATITUDE CARDINAL LUBOMYR HUSAR, MSU (1933), FIRST MAJOR ARCHBISHOP of KYIV-HALYCH of theUkrainian Greek Catholic Church

Thursday, February 23, 2012

Its been a Year since His Beatitude Cardinal Lubomyr Husar, MSU willfully submitted his resignation as the Major Archbishop of Kyiv Halych to His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI, though the Synod and the Faithful of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church gives him the Title Patriarch, a very unusual move for a Eastern Rite because there are no Canonical provision for it, even the Canon Law of the Eastern Church does not have such. Patriarch Lubomyr, or others addressed him as Cardinal Husar, will be forever remember for the Transfer of the Seat of Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church from Lviv to Kyiv in 2005 with the approval of then Pope Blessed John Paul II, reversing the decision of Pope Pius VII when in 1806 Lviv becomes the Greek Catholic Metropolia till the recent Transfer, changing the title Major Archbishop of Lviv into Major Archbishop of Kyiv-Halych of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church

Here are his Historical First, Originally posted in the Blog Annales Ecclesia Ucrainae of Rev. Fr. Athanasius McVay, a Ukrainian Greek Catholic Historian and Priest based in Rome

 2. To have begun his ministry as a secular priest but later embraced the monastic life. Virtually all of his predecessors were members of the Basilian Order. Since 1806 all have been secular priests with the exception of Metropolitan Sheptytsky.

Happy Birthday Patriarch Iosif I (Slipyj)!

Sunday, February 19, 2012

This post was a bit late, for the Ukrainian Catholics celebrated his birthday 2 days ago, but as the saying goes: "better late than never".

From Religious Information Service of Ukraine (RISU)

Today is the 120th anniversary of Josyf Slipyj, Major Archbishop, Patriarch, Cardinal and Metropolitan (1944-84).

He was born in Zazdrist in western Ukraine on 17 February 1892, he was a churchman of three careers: scholar, confessor of the faith and an international voice for persecuted Christians. After studies in Lviv, Innsbruck (Austria), Rome and Paris, he became a professor and then Rector (1928-44) of the Lviv Seminary and Theological Academy. A prolific writer, his collected works include some twenty volumes. In 1939 he was ordained archbishop by Metropolitan Sheptytsky and succeeded him as head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church upon the latter's death on 1 November 1944.

On 11 April 11 1945 Slipij was arrested by the Soviet authorities and spent eighteen years in Stalinist prisons, labor camps and Siberian exile, where he earned a reputation for being an iron-willed, intrepid witness to the faith. Through the intervention of Pope John XXIII and President Kennedy he was released in 1963 to attend the Second Vatican Council.

During the following twenty-one years Slipyj energized the life of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in the West, establishing the Ukrainian Catholic University and building the Cathedral of St. Sophia in Rome. His death on 7 September 1984 was followed in 1992 by the translation of his remains to Lviv, where they were interred in St. George's Cathedral with the participation of over a million faithful.

Mnohaya Lita to the new Eastern Catholic Cardinals!!!!! AXIOS +

Yesterday a Consistory was held by His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI to create new members of the Sacred College of the Cardinals. 2 of the 22 newly created Cardinals are Heads of Different Sui Iuris Eastern Catholic Church, namely His Beatitude Cardinal George Alencherry, Major Archbishop of Ernakulam-Angamalay of the Syro Malabar Catholic Church and His Beatitude Cardinal Lucian Muresan, Major Archbishop of Fagaras si Alba Iulia of the Romanian Greek Catholic Church. Like i say before, many have object this kind of Pro "Forma" because Eastern Rite should not be objected to the Authority of a Latin Rite Hierarch. Nevertheless, we should understand that they accept being raised or named to the Cardinalate as a gesture of Unity and being in Communion not just with the Pope of Rome, but the Holy Universal Pontiff of the Catholic Church as a whole

Above is the Video clip of naming them Cardinals, giving their position as Cardinal Priest and Cardinal Deacon. It has been highly heated Issue that Major Archbishop must be named the Highest Cardinalatial rank, the Cardinal Bishop because their position is equal to that of the Patriarch, though with slight difference.
Below are the handpicked Photos of the Consistory, including the very unusual Choir Dress of the Syro Malabar Cardinal which makes me Amazed that i cannot move on until now Hehehe all this Pictures are taken from the Facebook Fan Page in honour of the Syro Malabar Major Archbishop

CARDINAL GEORGE MAR ALENCHERRY

CARDINAL LUCIAN MURESAN

2 Eastern Catholic Hierarchs named member of the Sacred College of the Cardinals

Saturday, January 7, 2012

Pope Benedict XVI announced on 2012.01.06 that he would elevate the following 22 prelates to the Sacred College of Cardinals in a consistory on 2012.02.18.  And among this list of this Ordinaries two Heads coming from 2 different Sui Iuris Eastern Catholic Churches, namely His Beatitude George Alencherry of the Syro Malabar Catholic Church and His Beatitude Lucian Muresan of the Romanian Greek Catholic Church. Below are the Information regarding this 2 Heads of their respective Sui Iuris Eastern Rite Churches.

Source cited from Wikipedia

"Cardinal-Designate Mar George Alencherry [Malayalam: മാര്‍ ഗീവര്‍ഗിസ് ആലഞ്ചേരി (Mar Giwargis Aalancheri)] (born 19 April 1945) is the current Major Archbishop of Ernakulam-Angamaly succeeding Varkey Vithayathil as head of the Eastern Catholic Syro-Malabar Churchsince his confirmation by Pope Benedict XVI on 25 May 2011.[1]. According to Syro-Malabar tradition, he should be granted the title of "Patriarch of Mar Thoma Nasranis and the Gate of All India." On Friday, January 6, 2012, it was announced that he would be among the list of prelates to be raised to the cardinalate by Pope Benedict XVI in a consistory scheduled for Saturday, February 18, 2012.

Alencherry was born in Thuruthy, Changanacherry. He was ordained a priest on 19 November 1972. He was secretary of the Archeparch of Changanacherry and assistant pastor of the cathedral as well as director of "Sunday Schools" in the archeparchy.
He studied at the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Seminary of St Joseph in Alwaye and earned a doctorate at the Institut Catholique de Paris, where he specialised in catechesis. On his return from Paris, he was appointed director of the Centre for Catechesis. He then directed the Pastoral Orientation Centre, Cochin, inter-ritual, which depends of the Kerala Catholic Bishops' Conference (KCBC).
He served as a professor of Pastoral Counselling and Systematic Theology at the Faculty of "Paurastya Vidyapitham, Pontifical Oriental Institute of Religious Studies of Vadavathoor, Kottayam, and at the Pontifical Institute of Theology and Philosophy in Alwaye. He was vicar general of the archeparchy from 11 November 1996 until he was appointed first eparch of Thuckalay and was ordained on 2 February 1997.
On 24 May 2011 he was elected Major Archbishop. Pope Benedict XVI confirmed the election on 25 May 2011. Major Archbishop Alencherry said his services will be for all people of India. He stressed inter-rite relations, inter-faith harmony and ecumenism.
He is the first head of the Syro-Malabar Church to be elected by its synod. When Pope John Paul II made the Syro-Malabar Church a major archiepiscopal church in 1992, appointing Cardinal Antony Padiyara as its first major archbishop, he reserved the power to appoint the major archbishop and bishops. However, in 2004, the Holy See granted full administrative powers to the church, including the power to elect bishops."

"Lucian Mureşan (born on 23 May 1931) is the Major Archbishop of Făgăraş and Alba Iulia(based in Blaj) and thus head of the Romanian Church United with Rome, Greek-Catholic.
Lucian Mureşan was born in the village of Firiza (now the Ferneziu district of Baia Mare),Romania, the tenth of Peter and Maria Mureşan's twelve children. He attended primary school in Firiza and secondary school in Baia Mare. He was initially unable to pursue his dream of becoming a Catholic priest because the Romanian Church United with Rome had been outlawed in 1948.
On 6 January 2012 Pope Benedict XVI named him cardinal. He will be created cardinal in the consistory on 18 February."

Many of our Eastern Catholic brethren has criticized some heads of these different Eastern Catholic Sui Iuris Churches for receiving the Cardinalate, being a title only use in the Latin Rite by those who received it and that Eastern Catholic Major Archbishops and Patriarchs should not be named into such, though in the History some Eastern Catholics who have become part of the Sacred College of the Cardinal has contributed a lot in the Catholic Church, even one almost being elected Pope in 1958 by named of Gregory Peter Agagianian, Patriarch of the Armenian Catholic Church. Being named as a Cardinal did not necessarily mean that they are becoming Subordinates in the Latin Church but rather being given more privilege, namely the right to participate in future Papal Conclave to elect the Pope. Now we have 5 living Eastern Catholic Hierarchs who are part of the Sacred College of the Cardinals, and they are the following: His Beatitude Cardinal Lubomyr Husar, Major Archbishop Emeritus of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church; His Beatitude Cardinal Antonios Naguib, Patriarch of the Coptic Catholic Church; His Beatitude Cardinal Ignace Moussa Daoud, Patriarch Emeritus of the Syrian Catholic Church and Prefect Emeritus of the Congregation of the Eastern Churches; His Beatitude Cardinal Nasrallah Pierre Sfeir, Patriarch Emeritus of the Maronite Catholic Church and His Beatitude Cardinal Emmanuel III Delly, Patriarch of the Chaldean Catholic Church. It will make them 7 to be precised though it is certain that most of them reached the Age of 80, losing their right to Vote in Conclaves. If you say that they do not elect the Pope because it is the only duty of Cardinals from the Roman Church, not the Eastern Church, well we are talking about the Catholic Church as a whole and not divided into Churches

On behalf of this Blog, including the Facebook Group and Fan Page, we congratulate the Eastern Catholic Hierarchs being named as members of the Sacred College of the Cardinals. AXIOS!!!!!

HIS BEATITUDE CARDINAL JOSYF SLIPYJ (1892-1984), Confessor of Faith and First Major Archbishop of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church

Tuesday, May 31, 2011

Of all the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Hierarchs who have been sent to the Soviet Gulag, tortured, starved, even Executed or Assasinated, only Patriarch Josfy the Confessor came out alive and to lead the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church on its Diaspora. Sadly that he never see himself going back to Ukraine alive when he die in 1984, and Six years later bringing back his remains in Lviv in 1992.

Prayer for the Beatification and Canonization of Confessor Patriarch Josyf Slipyj
Most Holy Trinity, glory and honour to You for the graces bestowed upon the Pastor of the Ukrainian Catholic Church, the Servant of God Josyf Slipyj, and for giving us a shining example of unshakeable faith and heroic perseverance of a defender of Your persecuted Church and an authentic witness of the Crucified Christ, throughout 18 years of severe hardship in Siberia.
Through his merits and intercession, grant us the strength to follow Christ on His Way of the Cross and help us obtain the grace, which we most need and for which we ask....(name it). May this received grace lead to the elevation on the altar of the Blessed your good, strong and faithful son of Your Church. For to You belongs all glory, honour, adoration, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Amen.
